Creating a book cover using a Photoshop template
To begin, I used InDesign to create this cover. Although you can use Photoshop to create a layout like this, InDesign has some specialized tools to line up and size objects proportionately. To save you time, I created a Photoshop template that you can download using the link below.Photoshop cover template
The file will look like this:
Once you have the template downloaded, open it up! The file is the same size that I used for the artwork in the center of my cover; the cover itself was roughly 8″ x 10″ (Blurb standard landscape). Explaining how to do this in an article would be tricky, so here is a detailed YouTube video:
Tips not covered in the video
Once you finish the cover template you will need to save the file as a Jpg, allowing you to place the new graphic in the center of your book design.
If you’re curious how I created the “Folkestad Family” center art, I started with Katie Pertiet’s “Blendable Photo Cards No. 6“.
I opened up the photo card in a separate Photoshop file, then added the text “Folkestad Family 2014” using the font wisdom script. The unusual coloring of the text was created by adding a color burn to the layer style. I highlighted this selection in the image below:
