Sometimes you have a picture where the clone stamp doesn’t work well. A perfect example is this bird, a black banded wood creeper, shown below. If you notice, the right side of the picture has some pine branches poking out, and the photographer who took it wanted to get rid of the branches. Because this image has such a nice, soft bokeh (background), using the paintbrush to color over the branches was an easier solution.

Here you can see the edited image, with the pine branches removed.
This screen shot shows what the painted layer looks like, all by itself. Remember, the grey and white check pattern in Photoshop represents transparency.
